The Simesite anniversary and the recent postings there sent me into a reverie about the transformations that have changed practically every aspect of show business in the last few decades. For most of those monitoring Simesite, of course, the biggest earthquake was the purchase of Variety itself almost twenty years ago. The new owners utterly discarded the colorful and sometimes wacky culture of Variety – presumably to their great satisfaction, although to the discomfort of many of those who were devoted to that culture – and the ensuing upheaval came at a time when show business journalism itself was rapidly changing.

Simesite redesigned

It is now nearly three and a half years since Roger Watkins and I launched Simesite on Dec. 16 2002. Little did we think at that time that after such a relatively short period the site would have to continue with one of its founders permanently absent, not because the Site had not been a success nor due to any internal dispute, but because of his premature death.

The New Year on Simesite

The Sardi’s dinner last September 24th was not the “last hurrah” for all the muggs around the world, as some of you may have feared. While it certainly was a landmark event, which probably will never be repeated and the memory of which will be cherished by all of us in the future, we are determined to keep the ball rolling on our side at least. We do so in the hope that although we hear virtually nothing from any of you out there (not even a Season’s Greetings wish!) we know that most of you appreciate the existence of this webpage and occasionally access it.
