Two veterans ankle Variety

Two veterans of the old pre-Reed Variety have ankled the paper.

Bob Hawkins, who started as a stringer in 1948 reviewing the Venice Film Festival, and later became Rome bureau chief, and later London-based European honcho, recently retired from the paper. Bob sez his 57 year run may be the longest on record among those living, perhaps beaten only by Army Archerd in Hollywood. The Hawk was well treated by the post-Silverman management, and received the classical timepiece at the time of his departure. Bob is still living in his apartment in Rome, near the Tiber River, and keeps in touch which others from the old days such as Deborah Young and Nadia Werba.

I DREAMED of radio. Is it an odd thing to be dreaming about? Not so odd. Radio is my Rosebud. I don’t guess I’ll mutter the single word radio as life squeezes out of me. I’m not Charles Foster Kane. But I can dream my Rosebud, can’t I?

Berlin 05

/// Ernie Gill emailed over from the Berlin film festival that there has been much quaffing of beer among the mugg alumni. Ernie says: ” Perhaps you would like to mention that Jack Kindred is prowling the 55th festival, slumming with the likes of former muggs Ron Holloway, Peter Cowie and me.”

Fully recovered from a bout with stomach cancer, Holl is looking younger than ever, says Gill, adding that Jack is “being as nimble and quick as ever.” Mercifully, he’s given up jumping over candlesticks!
